Degree Works Student FAQs

What is Degree Works?

Degree Works is a degree auditing tool to monitor progress towards degree completion and graduation requirements as published in the academic bulletin.  The audit is not an academic transcript, not an official notification of degree completion requirements, nor does it take the place of academic advising.

How do I access Degree Works?

Degree Works can be accessed through WConnect in the Quicklaunch Menu.  Scroll down and click the yellow “load more” button to view the Degree Works Icon.

What is a degree audit?

A degree audit is a review of completed and currently registered courses and displays completed and outstanding requirements to complete a degree.

How current is the information?

Degree Works is updated nightly.  Any changes made to a student’s academic record such as change of major and posting of transfer credit will be viewable in Degree Works the following day.

What if I have double majors?

Double majors are not viewable in Degree Works at this time.  You can view your first major in Degree Works.  A paper audit for your second major can be obtained through your adviser or the Registrar’s Office.

What is course history?

Course history is a chronological list of all coursework found in the top right corner above the student information block beside the print button.

What are blocks?

Blocks are various categories such as Degree Requirements, General Education Requirements, Major Requirements, etc.

What does @ mean?

The @ symbol is a wild card.  It may be used after a subject code.  Example, MA@ means any Mathematics course within that subject.  MA 1@ means any Mathematics course that has a course number beginning with the number 1.

How does Degree Works decide where to place courses?

Audits in Degree Works are dynamic.  Courses are placed on the audit at the end of each term.  The most recent courses completed or currently in-progress/registered courses are placed on the audit first, pushing previously completed courses to new slots or into electives.

How do repeated courses appear on the degree audit?

The most recent completed course is used for degree requirements. Degree Works will place the most recent completed course in the appropriate block.  The previous attempted courses will be displayed in the insufficient block.  All repeated courses will display an (R) to the right of the courses.

What if I have a course substituted?

Your adviser will need to complete a Transfer Substitution form.  Once the approved form is received in the Registrar’s Office, the substitution is entered manually by the Registrar’s Office as an exception in Degree Works.

Why are my transfer hours not showing?

If you have requested your official transcript to be sent directly to the W and your transfer hours are not showing in Degree Works, contact the Registrar’s Office.

What if my major is incorrect?

Log into WConnect and submit a Change of Major form through BannerWeb.  Once the approved form is received, your major will be changed manually in the Registrar’s Office.

Where can I find a legend to identify symbols in my audit?

The legend can be found at the bottom of your audit directly below the last block.

What is a What-If Analysis?

The “what-if” function allows you see to what an audit would look like if you were to change your major.  It will show you what requirements are met and what courses you would need to take.

My audit is showing 100% degree progress.  Do I need to apply for graduation?

Yes.  100% degree competition in Degree Works does not automatically award your degree.  You must apply for graduation in BannerWeb through WConnect.  All graduating students must apply.  This includes graduate students and students who are not participating in the commencement ceremony.

Things to keep in mind while using the system:

  • Degree Works is accessible through W Connect Portal under the icons.
  • Double majors are not in Degree Works
  • Only the 2018-19 catalogs forward have been programmed in the system
  • The audits are dynamic – courses are replaced on the audit at the end of each term
  • The most recent courses completed or currently in-progress/registered courses are placed on the audit first, pushing previously completed courses to new slots or into electives
  • It will not always put the course in the same spot as the paper audit if there are options
  • You can look at audits with or without courses in progress and/or future registered courses
    • These affects the Credits Applied count in each block area
  • You can process a new audit by clicking the Process button
  • Degree Works tries to place every course taken in a required area instead of double dipping if there are multiple courses that meet the requirement
    • For example, if PSY 101 is a major requirement and a student also took SOC 201, it will put SOC 201 in the GenEd Social Sci area and PSY 101 in the major area
  • Degree Works will use the course multiple times if there are no other courses that will fit a requirement
    • For example, If the student only took PSY 101 it would place it in the GenEd Social Sci area and in the major requirements
    • This would change if in the future the student took another GenEd Social Sci course
  • You can place advising notes on the student audit by clicking the button in the upper right hand corner that is three stacked dots
  • What-If audits can be processed against a potential new major/minor
