Research Opportunities

The MUW Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) supports undergraduate researchers at the Mississippi University for Women, providing opportunities for students to participate in projects, conferences, publications, and internships that focus on conducting research and creative exploration.

The MUW Honors College offers academic community in honors courses and beyond including opportunities to work closely with faculty across campus and hands-on, real-world experiences that matter, including independent research and study abroad.

MUW's Undergraduate Research Conference is a yearly event to showcase the on-going, in-progress, and proposed work of undergraduates across campus.

Summer Scholars is a chance for students to do an independent research study that is guided by a faculty member during the summer semesters.

The NASA-sponsored MSSGC funds undergraduate student research and other activities at Mississippi University for Women designed to increase student engagement in and awareness of STEM topics.

Beginning in your junior year, biology majors may apply to conduct research under the direction of a member of the faculty.

For freshmen, the SEA-PHAGES program involves taking the BSB 171-172 course sequence. These are inquiry based-courses which involve a two-semester-long project to isolate and characterize novel viruses from the local environment.

Students must take BSB 171 as a prerequisite for BSB 172. Students who complete both courses will be trained in molecular biology, microbiology, and virology techniques and learn bioinformatics skills. Students will be sent to scientific meetings and publish their findings in national scientific databases and peer-reviewed journals.

Faculty in the Department of Sciences and Mathematics believe that independent mentored research provides students with powerful, unique experiences that facilitate student growth and learning beyond the classroom. Several faculty members in the department carry out research projects in which they involve interested students. These projects can be used by the student as honor's college projects, summer scholar's projects, MSSGC projects, BSB/BSM 499 projects, or simply as research projects for their own sakes.
