Mississippi University for Women has named Mary Helen Ruffin as chair of the Department of Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Mary Helen Ruffin

“Throughout my tenure as a nurse educator, I have been afforded the opportunity to work alongside distinguished faculty and staff members. It is a great honor to be appointed chair of the ASN program. I look forward to rising to the challenge of providing students with a personalized learning environment that promotes leadership and clinical judgment skills,” said Ruffin.

Ruffin has been a faculty member at The W for more than a decade with the responsibilities of classroom and clinical instruction as well as course coordination, curriculum revisions and student advising. She was nominated for Faculty Member of the Year in 2022 and is an active member of program, college, and university committees.

Ruffin said, “Inspiring students is the greatest joy of teaching. Inspiring students to save lives is the greatest gift of teaching. I hope that I can impress upon each student the love and dedication one must have for the nursing profession. Most importantly, I hope to equip each student with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become caring, compassionate, confident and competent registered nurses.”

In addition to her academic experience, Ruffin has experience as an emergency department registered nurse and educational health nurse in hospital settings.

“I remain committed to building the department’s long tradition of excellence by actively engaging students with innovative teaching-learning strategies and fostering an inclusive and positive academic environment for both faculty and students. I am passionate about creativity, mentorship and technological advances to enhance the development of students and faculty throughout their academic and professional careers,” added Ruffin.

Ruffin is a Certified Nursing Educator, a professional certification that demonstrates proficiencies in the field of nursing education. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Education and Administration from William Carey University, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of North Alabama and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Alabama.

Music always was a passion Payton Tanner shared with her father.

Rusty Tanner taught Payton to appreciate older country music, 1970s rock n’ roll and other genres of music. Their musical bond carried over to church, where they would sing old hymns together and harmonize.

Payton’s bond with music expanded to opera, which allowed her to showcase her vocal range as a sopranista and to experience the thrill of performing. She planned on pursuing a career in opera, but her path changed on Easter 2020 when her father suffered a massive stroke.

“The only thing that distracted him from his pain and would help him to fall asleep was when I would sing his favorite songs or hymns to him,” said Payton, who cared for her father after the stroke left him paralyzed and bedridden.

Caring for Rusty motivated Payton to blend her desire to help others with her love for music and study music therapy at Mississippi University for Women. Even though Rusty died in September 2020, Payton continues to nurture her love for opera and to use music to help others.

Last month, Payton advanced to the finals at the National Association for Teachers of Singing (NATS) National Student Auditions in Chicago, where she won Honorable Mention.

“I was so happy and entirely grateful to be a finalist out of 13,000 people,” said Payton, who said she had a cold when she competed in the semifinals and finals. “This whole experience gave me confidence I can still pursue opera while being a music therapist. My hope in the future is to work as a music therapist while also pursuing a career in opera! I hope to one day do both because who says I can’t?”

Payton sang a repertoire of four classical vocal selections for the preliminary and semifinal rounds: “Give Me Jesus” arranged by Moses Hogan; “Der Pokal” by Richard Strauss; “O, quand je dors” by Franz Liszt; and “Donde Lieta” from La Boheme by Giacomo Antonio Puccini. In the finals, Payton performed “Donde Lieta.”

Payton, who is from Alabaster, Alabama, will complete her Music Therapy Equivalency at The W in December and is working as an intern at Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Hospice in Vero Beach, Florida, through the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) National Roster of Internship Programs, which is a systematically organized reference designed to assist music therapy students in selecting and acquiring appropriate internships after university education.

“We are all very proud of Payton’s achievement and are excited to see where her career takes her next,” said Dr. Julia Mortyakova, chair of The W’s Music Department.

Dr. Susan Hurley, an assistant professor of voice at The W, praised Payton for being the first-place winner in her category at last November’s Regional Student Auditions (a competition for singers in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi) that made her eligible to submit a video audition for the National Student Auditions (NSA). She said it didn’t surprise her that Payton advanced to the semifinals and the finals because she has a combination of natural ability, strong training, high motivation and cheerful work ethic.

“Payton is an extremely talented and upcoming young singer,” said Hurley, who worked with Payton in the vocal studio and in an Opera Workshop class, where Payton was a featured soloist. “During our time together, I saw her grow tremendously as an interpreter on the lyric stage.

“I think Payton has a wonderful future in music whether that be in performance or music therapy or some combination of the two.”

Payton thanked Dr. Hurley for her “amazing” coaching and inspiring her to pursue what she loves to do most and supporting her in music therapy. She also said she will continue to draw upon the love of music she nurtured with her father even when he was in hospice. Payton said she would practice piano in his room and he would clap whenever she played the song right.

“He was supportive and came to all of my singing events growing up and allowed me to pursue music in the first place,” Payton said. “I know he would be very proud.”

In the U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 College Rankings for Regional Universities South, The W is No. 1 in graduating students carrying the lightest debt load. The ranking shows students typically have $15,000 in loan debt after graduation and that 64% of freshman students receive federal loan assistance.

“With current concerns about the economy and rising prices, everyone is concerned about finances and debt,” The President Nora Miller said. “The W strives to make an excellent education affordable, and this No. 1 rating for Least Debt shows that to be true.”

The W also ranked 29th overall (14th among public institutions) in Ethnic Diversity and 42nd overall (28th among public institutions) in Highest Acceptance Rate. U.S. News & World Report doesn’t break schools into groups of comparable sizes or differentiate between public and private. Proprietary schools ranked are considered private.

In 2021, U.S. News & World Report named The W No. 4 in Top Public Performers on Social Mobility-Regional Universities South and No. 10 among Top Performers on Social Mobility-Regional Universities South. The university moved up to No. 4 as a Best Value School Value School among Public Regional Universities in the South. For the third-consecutive year, The W ranked No. 18 among Top Public-Regional Universities South.

In addition to the U.S. News & World Report rankings, The W was the second-highest ranked university in Mississippi on Washington Monthly’s 2021 Best Bang for the Buck: South.

In the 2022 rankings, the data is of loans owned by the U.S. Department of Education, which is the vast majority of student loans. Typical Total Debt After Graduation is the median cumulative amount borrowed by 2018 and 2019 graduates who took out federal loans. Freshmen Receiving Federal Loan is the percentage of first-time, full-time undergraduates who borrowed during the 2018-2019 academic year.

In its Ethnic Diversity category, U.S. News & World Report factors in the total proportion of minority students, leaving out international students, and the overall mix of groups. The data is drawn from each institution’s fall 2020 total undergraduate student body. The ethnic categories used in the calculations are non-Hispanic African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian, Asian, non-Hispanic white and multiracial (two or more races). Students who did not identify themselves as members of any of those demographic groups were classified as non-Hispanic whites for the purpose of these calculations. The formula produces a diversity index that ranges from 0 to 1. The closer a school’s number is to 1, the more diverse the student population.

In its Acceptance Rate category, U.S. News & World Report ranked the top 100 schools with the highest acceptance rates for the fall 2020 entering class among all schools it surveyed.

In fall 2021, The W retained 75% of the fall 2020 full-time bachelor’s degree seeking, first-time freshmen and graduated or retained 83% of the fall 2020 full-time, bachelor’s degree seeking first-time transfers.

Mississippi University for Women has the 16th-most affordable online bachelor’s degree program in the nation, according to a recent ranking by Best Universities.

The ranking weighs the costs, accreditations and degree programs by each school. The W’s average net price is $13,023. Its annual tuition is $7,756.

The ranking comes on the heels of U.S. News & World Report ranking The W No. 1 in graduating students carrying the lightest debt load in its 2022 College Rankings for Regional Universities South. The ranking shows students typically have $15,000 in loan debt after graduation and that 64% of freshman students receive federal loan assistance.

The W also recently earned two top-five rankings and had nine total programs recognized by Intelligent.com as being among the best in the United States for 2022. The W received a No. 3 ranking in the Best Online Colleges with Lowest Out-of-State Tuition category.

Best Universities provides comprehensive and up-to-date lists of college rankings, from degree programs to campus facilities.
