W Wind Ensemble and Community Band to perform player’s choice concert
Mississippi University for Women’s Wind Ensemble and Community Band will present a spring concert, “Players Choice,”Monday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. on the Shattuck Hall Lawn.
Ginger Zingara, director of bands for The W, explained the theme. “Each semester I ask the musicians to share any ideas they have for repertoire for the band. This time, their suggestions lined up into a perfect program order. Each person who suggested a piece will introduce it and share why they chose it.”
The concert opens with “Seventeen Come Sunday,” written by Percy Grainger, based on an old English folksong. Following will be “Regenesis” which describes the 1980 explosion of Mt. St. Helen, outside of Portland, Oregon. The third piece will be the world premiere of “Stewart’s Ballad,” written and conducted by the composer, Ryan Clark, in honor of his grandmother. Afterwards will be the lively celebration titled “Dragon Boat Festival” conducted by Columbus High School Band Director, LaTerence Varnado. The evening will conclude with the exciting and vibrant, “Variants” by Jack Bullock.
Everyone is invited to bring a lawn chair, food and drink to enjoy the music. The rain location will be Kossen Auditorium in Poindexter Hall. This performance is free and open to the public.
