Tuition Bank will offer educational opportunities for city employees
A partnership between Mississippi University for Women and the City of Columbus will establish a Tuition Bank, which will provide educational opportunities to city employees.
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by The W and the city today will permit selected city employees to enroll in regularly scheduled credit courses.

The Tuition Bank gives City of Columbus employees an opportunity to continue their education, develop new skills and grow professionally. We are proud to work with the city to invest in the people who serve our community every day.”
Mayor Stephen T. Jones said, “The Council and I are thrilled to offer this educational opportunity to our employees again. It not only shows the importance of community partnerships, but it also shows how the City of Columbus invests in its employees. We thank the administration at The W for making this happen.”
The W will establish a Tuition Bank of up to 200 credit hours per year to support the program. The Tuition Bank functions as a scholarship pool that covers participants’ tuition costs, subject to the limits outlined below. The Tuition Bank will provide approximately 75 credit hours in the fall semester (equivalent to 25 seats in standard 3-credit-hour courses), 75 credit hours in the spring semester and 50 credit hours in the summer term.
City employees will be recommended to the personnel director for these offerings by their department supervisor. The personnel director and chief operations officer shall review and forward the request to the mayor for final approval. All participants will complete an application for admission.
Applicants who meet regular admission requirements will be admitted in accordance with University and IHL policies. Applicants who are at least 21 years of age and do not meet regular freshman admission requirements may be considered for admission as non-degree seeking students in accordance with applicable policies. Enrollment for non-degree seeking students is subject to applicable credit hour limitations and institutional approval. Students are required to satisfy all course prerequisites and eligibility requirements as established by The W.
Participants enrolled under this agreement will receive tuition support through the Tuition Bank (i.e., a scholarship benefit), which will fully cover tuition charges up to the available credit-hour limits.
Participants remain responsible for all non-tuition expenses, including textbooks, instructional materials, fees and any other associated costs, unless otherwise specified.
The W’s Office of Academic Affairs will be the point of contact for the University. The Office of the Chief Operations Officer for the City of Columbus will be the point of contact for the City of Columbus.
