Mississippi University for Women will host its annual Navigating Health Sciences event starting in the Nissan Auditorium on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 9:00 a.m.

High school students will travel from across Mississippi to explore health sciences opportunities at The W. The event will have between seventy to one hundred participants and will last for a few hours in Parkinson and Turner Halls and the Pohl Education Building. Programs such as nursing, speech pathology, public health and kinesiology will be demonstrating and offering hands-on experience for prospective entrants.

“It’s exciting to see students that are interested in our programs,” said Dr. Brandy Larmon, dean of the Vandergriff College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “[Navigating Health Sciences] started for nursing, but we’re seeing more students interested in our other programs as well, so it’s thrilling to me to see the whole college participate in a day of recruitment, basically.”

Current students and faculty from the college will lead activities and connect with high school students. Previous years’ exercises have included CPR, IV training and other simulations.

“Interested students rotate through hands on stations,” Larmon said. “We have med administration stations where they can actually interact with syringes and see what it’s like to do a push medication. It’s an opportunity for the high school students to actually see what it’s like here in our lab, and they get to meet faculty and students.”

The W was ranked as the best nursing school in Mississippi in 2024 and 2025 by RegisteredNursing.org. Students in The W’s Baccalaureate Program in Nursing have maintained a one hundred percent pass rating on the NCLEX test in recent years. Niche.com has The W ranked in the top thirty nursing schools across the nation and as the best value for college education in the state of Mississippi.
