Mississippi University for Women’s Counseling Center is hosting its fourth annual Mental Health and Wellness Fair, Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the W Room on campus.

The event is aimed at showcasing all of the mental health resources available to students, faculty and staff at The W, both on and off campus. There are around 32 vendors set to participate this year.

“One common goal of all our agencies is to help ‘Stomp out the Stigma’ surrounding mental health issues, by providing information that is helpful when dealing with a mental health crisis. It is important to take care of our minds and bodies,” said Kimberly Davis, counselor at The W’s Counseling Center and organizer of the event.

According to the National institute of Mental Health, tens of millions of people in the United States are affected by some form of mental illness. The American Psychological Association shows that many college students face struggles with mental health, a number that has been worsening over the years.

“We have had many students, staff and faculty ask us questions about mental health issues, so we wanted to put together a group of knowledgeable agencies that could possibly help us answer their questions. We are excited to welcome off campus agencies and hospitals to our campus, as well as many on campus offices,” Davis said.

In addition to the counseling center and the outside agencies, Active Minds, a student organization which promotes mental health awareness and education, is helping with the event.

“We are grateful for the community response and those that are coming today to share information about their services. The W is excited to be a part of the newly formed Community Action Coalition (CAC) in the Golden Triangle. This is a group of volunteering providers, pastors and community leaders with the goal of providing mental health resources and education to the communities it services,” Davis said.
