Dr. Julia Mortyakova

“The Steinway Top Teacher Award is a prestigious formal recognition by Steinway & Sons that commends outstanding instruction and leadership in music education at the piano, artistry and commitment to students, helping them to fulfill their highest potential as musicians and pianists. Exemplary piano teachers in regions throughout the country are nominated by their local authorized Steinway dealership and selected to receive the honor. I was nominated by Steinway Piano Gallery – Birmingham,” Mortyakova said.

Mortyakova is the chair of the music department at The W. She has been at The W since 2012, and has won many awards in her tenure at the university. This one, however, was a surprise to her.

“I was totally surprised to receive the award in the mail. It made me stop and smile in the middle of a busy day!” she said.

Every educator aims to make a difference in the lives of their students. For Mortyakova, this was validation of that.

Mortyakova said, “I love being a professor, making a difference in my students’ lives and guiding their artistic journeys.  I was elated to receive an award recognizing my passion for teaching. I want to thank Steinway & Sons for awarding me this honor.  I also want to dedicate this award to my many piano students – they continue to inspire me every single day!”
