With rates of anxiety, depression and the struggle to cope with life’s stressors increasing daily, mental health awareness and intervention have never been more critical. The W Counseling Center, in collaboration with the Mississippi Department of Mental Health (MDMH), will host its second Mental Health First Aid workshop on Feb. 26-Feb. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Gail P. Gunter Classroom in Fant Memorial Library.

LaBethani May

The free, evidence-based training workshop in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is designed to help individuals recognize, understand and respond to mental health challenges before they escalate into crises. A light breakfast will be provided. This training offers Continuing Education (CE) credits for licensed educators.

“One of the primary goals of The W Counseling Center is to promote mental health awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues. By hosting workshops like Mental Health First Aid, the center strives to create an environment where students, faculty and staff feel empowered to address mental health challenges effectively,” said Kimberly Davis, licensed mental health therapist at The W.

LaBethani May, MHAT grant coordinator for the MDMH, will lead the two-day workshop, ensuring that attendees receive high-quality training backed by research and professional expertise.

Before January 2024, May worked as the Outreach Coordinator of the Community Mental Health Center Grant for Hinds Behavioral Health Services in Jackson. While at Hinds, her understanding and passion for mental health increased tremendously. In July of 2023, May was selected as an Emerging Leader for the Mississippi Counseling Association.

“Mental Health First Aid is a crucial tool that teaches individuals how to recognize and respond to mental health challenges before they reach a crisis point. This training benefits anyone willing to learn and support their community,” said May.

According to the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, 60% of college students met the criteria for at least one mental health challenge.
