Mississippi University for Women announced Dr. April Greenway as Faculty Member of the Year during the 2024 spring commencement ceremonies.

“Dr. Greenway’s commitment to academic excellence and her dedication to empowering her students embodies the spirit of The W’s mission,” said University President Nora Miller.

The award includes a $1,000 grant from the Alumni Association. It honors faculty members who exhibit excellence in teaching, advising and professional activities — in particular, those who go beyond all expectations to support The W’s students and academic programs.

“I am so honored to be named Faculty Member of the Year. Being recognized by students and peers for this award has been one of the highlights of my career as a nurse educator. I love The W and am proud to be part of the wonderful faculty and staff here,” said Greenway.

Greenway is an associate professor of nursing in the Vandergriff College of Nursing and Health Science. Throughout her career at The W, she has served the Academic Calendar Committee, BSN Curriculum Committee and the Standard III Accreditation Committee. Greenway also serves as the vice-president of Sigma Theta Tau’s Zeta Rho Chapter, an international nonprofit organization with the mission of developing nurse leaders.

Her unwavering commitment to supporting The W’s RN to BSN students, the program, college and university, surpassing expectations at every turn, truly distinguishes her as an exceptional faculty member,” said Dr. Karen George, RN-BSN coordinator and 2023 Faculty Member of the Year award winner.

Throughout her higher education career, she has taught Cultural Diversity in Health Care, Professional Nursing Concepts in Leadership and Management and Advanced Nursing Concepts for the Professional Nurse, among other courses. Greenway’s clinical specialties include the emergency department, medical/surgical nursing and the surgical pre-/post- operating unit. 

“Dr. April Greenway consistently demonstrates excellence in teaching within the RN to BSN program, fostering an engaging and supportive learning environment for all students. Additionally, she goes above and beyond to support the students in the RN to BSN program and The W’s students by actively engaging in initiatives aimed at enhancing student success and program quality,” said Jessica Freeman, W nursing student.

Her professional certifications include Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support. Greenaway is a member of the Mississippi Hospital Association – Organization of Nurse Executives (MONE), Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the Mississippi Nurses’ Association and the American Nurses’ Association.

She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Administrative with Educator Concentration from Samford University. Greenaway holds a Master’s of Science in Nursing Education and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Alabama.
