Constitution Day returns to The W
Mississippi University for Women will observe Constitution Day, Thursday, Sept. 17, with the annual event co-hosted by the Student Government Association and the Department of History, Political Science and Geography.
Constitution Day, Sept. 17, marks the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787.
The Constitution Day event will take place from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on the front lawn of Fant Memorial Library. This year’s event will also tie in with America 250, the celebration of 250 years since America declared its independence as a nation.
“Constitution Day and the entire America 250 series of events represent the opportunity for all of us to reflect on just how radical the American Revolution was; to reaffirm our commitment to the values of liberty, equality and democracy; and to take stock of what we’ve accomplished, where we’ve gotten off track and the work we have ahead as we continue trying to live up to these ideals and make a success of our great experiment in self-government,” said Dr. Chanley Rainey, associate professor of political science, director of the Center for Women’s Research and Public Policy and one of the event coordinators.
The event will feature fun activities. There will be a patriotic photo contest, where attendees can take photos at the photo booth and post them on Instagram using #WConstitutionDay to enter the contest. W faculty, staff and students can then vote for the best photo using the form on the event’s webpage through midnight Sunday, Sept. 20. The winner will be announced Monday, Sept. 21 on Instagram and will receive a $20 Visa gift card.
Additionally, there will be a constitutional trivia contest. The person with the highest score will also receive a $20 Visa gift card.
Lastly, there will be volunteers on hand to share resources and answer questions about voter registration. Registration forms, envelopes and stamps will be available to make registering or updating a current registration easy.
“While the work of democracy is serious and difficult, we’ve worked hard to make Constitution Day itself a fun, engaging celebration,” Rainey said. “We hope folks will stop by and play some games with friends, snap a couple of selfies at our patriotic photo booth and enjoy a little friendly competition by entering our contests.”
