GS 104-188 Culinary Arts Building: This is new construction designed by JBHM Architects. The building has 51,275 gross square feet. The General Contractor is West Brothers Construction. Contract date was 7/27/2021, start date was 9/7/2021 and completion date was 7/28/2023. At this time, the project is 100% complete, and is in the one-year warranty period.

IHL 204-134 Campus HVAC Improvements (Funded with HEERF funds):  Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization is a state-of-the-art system that is designed to eradicate virus particles inside the HVAC system. Specialized components will be installed inside the existing duct work of each building on campus to aid in cleaning and sanitizing the air circulated throughout the building. Also included in the project is the upgrade to the Energy Management hardware and software components. The professional for this project is Dewberry Engineering and the general contractor is Brislin, Inc. This project is 100% complete. Project start date was 4/9/2022 and the completion date is 12/14/2023..

IHL 204-135 Residence Hall HVAC Improvements:  This project includes dual chiller replacement for Hasting Simmons and Columbus Halls, duct cleaning in Hasting Simmons, Columbus and Grossnickle, tankless water heater install for Grossnickle, domestic hot water and heating water connection from Grossnickle to Martin chiller plant. This project also includes an upgrade to the Energy Management hardware and software components. The professional for this project is Dewberry Engineering and the general contractor is Air Control Engineering. This project is 100% complete. Project start date was 11/22/2022 and the d completion date is 10/03/2023.

Fant Library Chiller Replacement (Emergency project): Fant Library chiller experienced a catastrophic failure during the Summer of 2023. This emergency project includes the installation of exterior emergency chill water connections, the rental of a 300 ton chiller for temporary cooling and the purchase and installation of a new permanent replacement chiller. The new chiller was delivery on January 9, 2024. Removal of the damaged chiller and installation of the new chiller was conducted by Air Control Engineering.

New Projects

Orr Chapel Front Porch Repair (Emergency project): This project includes structural repairs and stabilization to the multi-level front porch of Orr chapel. The project will also include replacing rotten or damaged wood and paint. The professional for this project is Pryor & Morrow and the general contractor is West Bros. Construction.

MUW Roofing:  This project includes shingled roof replacement/repairs for Painter, Reneau, Grossnickle Annex, Stark Natatorium, Pohl Gymnasium, Peyton and Fant. The project will also include renewal of the clock tower roof and a flat roof replacement for Reneau, Education 4th floor and CPDC. The project professional is JBHM Architects and is currently in the design phase.

MUW Exterior Building Renovations: This project includes exterior restorations of all painted surfaces. The buildings/areas included in this project are Orr Chapel front porch, Stovall, Painter, McDevitt, and Mary Wilson. The project professional is Pryor & Morrow Architects and is currently being advertised for bids.

MUW Cafeteria Steam Kettle Replacement: This project includes replacing the existing steam kettles with new individual self-contained kettles. This replacement will allow the deactivation of the large Duffner steam boiler currently providing steam to the original kettles. The result will be increased efficiencies and a substantial reduction in natural gas consumption. The project professional is Dewberry Engineering. This project was awarded to Air Control Engineering on March 20, 2024.

GS# 104-205 Waste Collection & Conveying (ARPA infrastructure funds): This Bureau of Building project will identify cross-connections between the sanitary sewer and stormwater sewer systems. Smoke testing has been completed along with a complete camera investigation of all underground systems. The project professional is Neel-Schaffer.

GS# 104-208 Stormwater Detention (ARPA infrastructure funds): This project will include the construction of an underground detention system to help alleviate flooding on campus. Project will begin upon the completion of GS# 104-205. The project professional is Neel-Schaffer.

GS# 104-215 Jones Hall Interior/Exterior Renovations: This is a Bureau of Building project. Planning and construction through Warranty Phase of renovations is planned for Jones Hall. This 47,000 square foot facility, first constructed in 1964 has only received minor improvements over the course of its life. Scope will include asbestos abatement, restoration of interior and exterior elements, interior reconfiguration, ADA improvements and major renovations of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and life safety systems.  Due to the building’s Mississippi Landmark status, coordination with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History will be required. The project professional is Schafer Zahner and Zahner.

GS# 104-214 South Campus Mechanical Plant Improvements: This is a Bureau of Building project. A new chiller plant is planned for construction to provide cooling for Jones, Kincannon, Goen and Frazer. This new plant will provide chilled water delivery with improved efficiencies and redundant backup cooling. The project professional is Dewberry Engineering.

GS# 104-218 Bathroom Renovations in Goen and Frazer:  This is a Bureau of Buildings Job Order Contract (JOC) to renovate the bathrooms in Goen and Frazer Halls. The base bid includes the encapsulation of tub/showers and repairs to toilets in bathrooms as priority work. Project budget will remain under $1M. Bid Alt #1: Paint bathroom walls and ceilings. Bid Alt #2: Strip and wax floors throughout the building. Bid Alt #3: Replace bathroom countertops, replace sinks and faucets. The JOC Contractor will be Brown & Root as selected by MUW. Work can commence on May 20, completion is required by August 1.

Kincannon Hall Bathroom Renovations:  This is a MUW Housing and Residence Life project. The base bid includes the encapsulation of tub/shower, replace shower fixtures, add a new curtain rod, add a new corner shelf, paint bathroom walls and ceilings. Bid Alt #1: Replace countertops and provide new lavatories and faucets. The bid opening for this project will be Friday, April 26, 2024.

Culinary Arts Landscape and Irrigation: This is a MUW project to add new landscaping and irrigation around the new Culinary Arts building. The professional for this project is Christian Preus Landscape Architecture. The bid opening for this project was March 20, 2024. The project was awarded to Stewart Environmental Construction, Inc.

Serenade Street Repair: Serenade Drive will have repairs made between Painter Hall and Carrier Chapel just south of the intersection. This work will begin March 27, 2024 and is anticipated to take approximately 4 days to complete. The street should be open for vehicle traffic by April 1, 2024.

Future Projects

GS# 104-216 Pohl Gym Renovation Pre-planning: This is a Bureau of Building project. Preplanning through the Design Development Phase for the renovation of the Old Pohl Gym is scheduled to begin Fall 2024. This vacant 25,700 square foot facility has not seen any significant improvements or modifications since its construction in 1927.  The scope will include a roof replacement, a complete exterior / interior renovation including some interior reconfiguration. This effort will also require asbestos abatement, ADA access improvements and renovation of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and life safety systems as per code requirements. This building is a Mississippi Landmark and will require coordination with MDAH.

GS# 104-217 Hogarth Center Renovation Pre-planning: This is a Bureau of Building project. Preplanning through the Design Development Phase for the renovation of the Hogarth facility is scheduled to begin Fall 2027. This 41,000 square foot building has not seen any significant improvements or modifications since its construction in 1969.  The scope will include roof replacement, a complete interior renovation with some reconfiguration of spaces. This effort will also require asbestos abatement, ADA access improvements and renovation of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and life safety systems as per code requirements.
