President Nora Miller honored for dedication and service
Mississippi University for Women President Nora R. Miller was recognized with several accolades for her distinguished record of academic leadership and service to her alma mater and higher education over the last 30 years.

Miller was recently awarded an honorary doctorate, the university’s highest honor. Each university is allowed to award two honorary doctorates per year, and the selections must be approved by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. Dr. Scott Tollison, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, made the announcement at spring commencement exercises. He was accompanied by Dr. Alfred Rankins, Jr., commissioner of higher education for the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, and IHL Trustee Jerry L. Griffith.
Tollison said, “As an alumna and someone who has dedicated much of her career to our university, President Miller has always led with a deep commitment to The W’s mission and its people. This recognition honors not only the impact of her 25 years of service, but also the lasting influence she will continue to have on our university and its history.”
President Miller said, “I receive this honor with sincere gratitude and a full heart. It reflects not just my journey, but the many people who were with me along the way. I would like to thank our provost and cabinet members, the commissioner and the Board of Trustees for this honor.”
During spring commencement, Miller was also awarded the status of president emeritus in recognition of her years of leadership and service to the university.
Additionally, the Medal of Excellence, the university’s highest non-degree honor, was bestowed upon Miller at her retirement celebration in April. Established in 1979, The W’s Medal of Excellence honors individuals who have exemplified the highest ideals of personal achievement in academic, personal and professional endeavors or through advocacy for the university.
Both the Mississippi Senate and House adopted resolutions commending Miller for her contributions to higher education and the state of Mississippi.
President Miller also received resolutions from the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors and the Rotary Club of Columbus at the April retirement celebration. The Rotary Club of Columbus hosted a send-off party for Miller on May 21 and presented her with a Distinguished Service Award, honoring her leadership and dedication, embodying the true Rotary motto: Service Above Self.
Miller, who has served as The W’s 15th president since 2018 and chief financial officer since 2001, announced her retirement in January, effective June 30.
