“Dr. Roy has made an undeniable impact on The W in his 20 years as a faculty member,” said W President Nora Miller. “His dedication to the Department of Mathematics and Science, the university as a whole and the Columbus community cannot be overstated. It is an honor to recognize his extraordinary career with this emeritus distinction.”

Roy came to The W as an assistant professor of chemistry in 2004. In 2009, he was made associate professor and in 2012, professor of chemistry.

“I feel proud that my service at The W has been acknowledged by honoring me as professor emeritus,” Roy said. “However, retirement is not the end of learning. Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘Learn as if you were to live forever.’ I also believe that learning is a lifelong process. One of my responsibilities will be to act as an ambassador for The W.”

Throughout his career, Roy has received numerous honors and recognitions, including co-guest editor for an issue of “Current Medicinal Chemistry,” WV-BRIN Summer Faculty Fellowship at West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, NASA-Consortium Faculty Research Enhancement Award and the MUW Faculty Research Committee summer research grant to name a few.

Roy boasts a litany of publications, including two textbooks which were written during his time at The W, “An Introduction to Pharmaceutical Sciences: Production, Chemistry, Techniques & Technology,” “A Self-Study Guide to the Principles of Organic Chemistry: Key Concepts, Reaction Mechanisms, and Practice Questions for the Beginner”; two translations of international publications into Bengali; and an extensive list of research papers.

In addition to his many publications, Roy has delivered presentations at academic conferences and universities across the United States. In 2020-2022, Roy was part of the faculty at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School at Carnegie Mellon University, where he taught introductory organic chemistry.
He was respected by fellow members of the Department of Sciences and Mathematics, including Dr. Ross Whitwam, associate chair of the department.

“I think Dr. Roy is more than deserving of emeritus status,” said Whitwam.

Roy also has experience in the pharmaceutical industry, having served in head, research, development and technical services departments for Square Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh.

Roy earned his Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan, and M.Sc. from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and holds a bachelor’s degree with honors in chemistry from the University of Dhaka as well.
