Mississippi University for Women was recently granted full reaccreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

Originally called simply the Music Hall, or the “Temple of Music” as residents of Columbus dubbed it, Poindexter Music Hall was built in 1905. In 2012, Poindexter Hall was re-opened after renovations.

“The reaccreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music demonstrates the high quality of The W’s music programs. I am proud of our legacy of excellence in music education and performance and look forward to helping future students pursue their passion for music,” said Dr. Julia Mortyakova, chair of The W’s Department of Music.

The reaccreditation follows a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation process of the programs that began in 2024. The next comprehensive review is scheduled to be conducted during the 2033-2034 academic year.

The W Department of Music offers the following music degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Arts in Music (Composition), Bachelor of Arts in Music (Performance), Bachelor of Music in Music Education (Instrumental, Vocal) and Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy.

The W became the first institution in the state of Mississippi to be accredited by NASM in 1935.

The National Association of Schools of Music was founded in 1924 to secure a better understanding among institutions of higher education engaged in work in music; to establish a more uniform method of granting credit; and to develop and maintain basic, threshold standards for the granting of degrees and other credentials.
