Beyond the Classroom: Experience Business Student Organizations

Your college experience is about much more than just classrooms and information. Employers routinely state that one of the most important elements in hiring a recent graduate is experiences outside of academics. These experiences help prove desired soft skills such as team work, leadership, time-management, and communication. You want to participate in college experiences that will build your expertise and lead to a successful career. Joining a student organization can do just that.

In addition to enhancing your résumé, you will also be able to meet new people with similar interests and goals to help you maximize your potential.

TVA Investment Club

The TVA Investment Club is a student run organization with the goal of educating its members about investing in the financial markets. The club is a partnership between the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and The W that provides a unique hands-on experience in financial asset management.

TVA Investment Challenge logo

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) provided the initial funding for the stock acquisitions within the portfolio. Members in the club actively manage the portfolio by designing long-term investment strategies, placing trades, and providing performance reports to TVA — all under the guidance of a faculty member. Additionally, members research and evaluate stocks and determine whether to buy, sell, or hold those stocks in a portfolio.

The club competes yearly against 24 other colleges and universities in the TVA Investment Challenge Program, one of the largest student investment programs in the nation.  MUW regularly places in the top 5 for performance-based awards based on the highest level of return and beating the S&P 500 Total Return Index.

Involvement with the TVA Investment Club will lead to valuable investment life skills, and is also a fantastic marketable skill for one’s resume’.

Membership Criteria

Open to all students (business and nonbusiness) who are interested in learning about investments. No prior finance or investment knowledge is needed.
