Pathways for Assistant Teachers and Paraprofessionals

At the School of Education, we’re committed to helping Assistant Teachers and Paraprofessionals take the next step in their careers.

Whether you are an experienced Assistant Teacher ready to advance or a traditional student who needs a job while finishing school, we have a pathway to get you to your own classroom.

If you already have a bachelor’s degree:

  • Apply to our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Alternate Route in Elementary Education.
  • Earn your Mississippi teaching license while completing online coursework and a full internship.

If you don’t yet have a bachelor’s degree:

  • Enroll in one of our undergraduate licensure tracks in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education.
  • Earn your degree and your teaching license while working as an Assistant Teacher.

Being a teacher assistant is one of the best ways to gain experience while pursuing your degree. Every year, more of our students choose this path—working in schools while completing their coursework online. Because you can complete your practicum hours in your own classroom, this pathway is flexible, practical, and effective.

Why Choose the School of Education?

  • Structured Pathways: Clear steps from Assistant Teacher to Licensed Teacher.
  • Expert Guidance: Personalized support from experienced faculty and advisors.
  • Flexible Courses: Online classes designed to fit your schedule.
  • Job-Embedded Practicum: Earn required field and practicum hours in your own classroom.
  • Career Advancement: Prepare for licensure and long-term success in education.

Your Classroom Becomes Your Training Ground

Assistant Teachers can immediately apply what they are learning to their daily work. This model supports licensure and strengthens the classroom experience for students right away.

The W Difference

The W offers one of the most affordable teacher preparation programs in Mississippi. Our graduates are homegrown educators—most stay in Mississippi, serving rural schools and high-need communities where they are needed most. With small class sizes, online flexibility, and personal relationships with faculty, you’ll receive the support you need to succeed.

Mississippi has a teacher shortage. You are needed, and The W is here to help you answer that call.
