Secondary Education (7–12)

Teach Your Passion in Middle and High Schools

The Secondary Education program at The W prepares teachers to share their knowledge in grades 7–12. Candidates select a content area—Biology, English, Mathematics, Physical Science, Spanish, or Social Studies—and complete a degree in that subject along with professional education coursework leading to teacher licensure.

Unlike our elementary and early childhood programs, secondary licensure is housed within the College of Arts & Sciences. Students receive their subject-area degree through the department of their major while completing the education courses required for licensure.

Why Choose This Program?

  • Earn a degree in the subject you love while preparing to teach.
  • Licensure in Biology, English, Mathematics, Physical Science, Spanish, or Social Studies.
  • Faculty guidance from both Arts & Sciences and Education.
  • Mississippi 7–12 teaching license upon successful completion of coursework and passing Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) required exams.

Coursework

  • Subject-area courses in your chosen major (Biology, English, Math, Physical Science, Spanish, or Social Studies).
  • Required professional education courses (foundations, instructional methods, classroom management, and literacy across the curriculum).
  • Student teaching internship in a secondary classroom.

Career Outcomes
Graduates are prepared for careers in:

  • Classroom Teaching: Licensed 7–12 teacher in public schools with full state benefits and retirement.
  • Private & Independent Schools: Subject-area teacher in middle or high school.
  • Further Study: Graduate programs in education or advanced study in your subject field.

The W Difference
Secondary teacher candidates at The W gain deep expertise in their chosen subject and the preparation needed to step into a classroom with confidence. By earning both a strong content degree and completing licensure coursework, graduates are equipped to make a meaningful difference for middle and high school students.
