Alternate Route to Classroom Teaching
A Pathway to Teaching for Degree Holders
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at The W is designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field and want to become licensed teachers through an alternate-route program. This program provides the coursework and classroom experience needed to move into the teaching profession with confidence.
Students may pursue licensure in:
- Elementary Education (K–6)
- Secondary Education (7–12 or K–12) in areas such as Biology, English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Music, Theatre, Spanish, and more.
The MAT is a flexible, affordable program that can be completed in as few as four semesters. Coursework is offered online with advising support to create an individualized plan of study, and all students complete a full internship in a classroom setting.

Admissions Requirement
- Minimum 2.75 GPA for graduate study.
Licensure Progression
Elementary Education (K–6)
- At program entry: 3-year, non-renewable Mississippi Educator License (Class A, 4–6).
- After program completion: 5-year, renewable Mississippi Educator License (Class A, 4–6).
- After earning the master’s degree: 5-year, renewable Mississippi Educator License (Class AA, K–6).
Secondary Education (Grades 7–12 or K–12 subject areas)
- At program entry: 3-year, non-renewable Mississippi Educator License (Class A, 7–12 or K–12).
- After program completion: 5-year, renewable Mississippi Educator License (Class A, 7–12 or K–12).
- After earning the master’s degree: 5-year, renewable Mississippi Educator License (Class AA, 7–12 or K–12).
