De’Shawn Charles Winslow was born and raised in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He is the author of two novels Decent People and In West Mills, both set in the fictional town of West Mills. His work has been awarded an American Book Award and the Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction. He holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a BFA and MA from Brooklyn College.
