Silas House returns to the symposium with his sixth novel Southernmost, thestory of a Tennessee preacher who, after a disastrous Cumberland river flood, embarks on a search for his ostracized, gay brother.House’s other novels include The Coal Tattoo, A Parchment of Leaves, Clay’s Quilt, Eli the Good, and Same Sun Here (with Neela Vaswani).He also co-wrote Something’s Rising, a collection of creative nonfiction with Jason Howard, and has writtenthree plays:  In These Fields (co-written with Sam Gleaves), This Is My Heart for You, and The Hurting Part.

Did You Know?

  1. House teaches in the MFA program at Spalding University and is NEH Chair in Appalachian Studies at Berea College.
  2. He is also a music journalist, writing for No Depression and NPR’s All Things Considered.
  3. He is the recipient of the Appalachian Book of the Year award, the EB White Award, and the Lee Smith Award, among others.
