The English Language Arts concentration provides a pathway for students interested in a career in teaching English at the middle school or high school levels by providing a thorough foundation in the key content areas of literature, writing, and theory.
The English Language Arts concentration is designed to prepare students for an Alternate Route pathway to teacher certification with a well-rounded curriculum backed up by individualized advising that will help students navigate entry into a suitable program..
The concentration alone does not lead to teacher licensure; full acceptance into and completion of an MAT program or another approved alternate route pathway is required. See the Accelerated Bachelor’s/MAT program description for full details.

Vision Statement: In keeping with the Mississippi University for Women Mission, the Enlight Core Program provides students with the skills, knowledge, and values they need to become independent, productive members of society in our continually changing world.
Mission Statement: The Mississippi University for Women Enlight Core Program provides a foundation in the liberal arts that includes knowledge in the historical, literary, aesthetic, scientific, and cultural traditions that shape the world, and fosters skills that allow students to become civically responsible life-long learners ready to adapt to new challenges.
Guiding Principles: All students who complete the Mississippi University for Women Enlight Core Program will demonstrate:
Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree must include the following courses (or demonstrate equivalent competency) in their academic program:
To fulfill the language requirement for the B.A., students must complete the 202 level or above in a foreign language. For information on foreign language placement, see the Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy section in the Bulletin. If, upon entering the University, a student already has sufficient background to be successful in 201-202, he/she does not need to enroll in 101-102. The requirement is in essence six hours credit at the 200-level or above.
Note: One of the two language or theory courses must be EN 302 History and Structure of the English Language or EN 305 Applied Linguistics, the other may be any other course from this list.
Note: Each course may count for only one requirement within the major, but literature surveys may count for both General Education requirements and major requirements. Of all major courses, at least one must be 300- or 400-level literature courses and one additional course must be a 400-level literature course.
Total Hours Required for a BA in English - English Language Arts: 124 Semester Hours
In the second semester of their junior year, students will be prepared to apply for admission to the Accelerated Bachelor’s/MAT program at The W. Through this pathway, students may take up to 12 credit hours of graduate coursework as part of their undergraduate program. Other seniors may qualify to take up to 6 credit hours of graduate coursework with approval from the MAT program.
These options allow students to complete some or all of the 9 credit hours of graduate initial licensure coursework required to begin the MAT Internship as undergraduates. Upon earning the bachelor’s degree, passing an approved Praxis II subject-area exam, gaining full admission to the MAT program, and completing the required 9 graduate credit hours, candidates are recommended for a three-year, non-renewable Class A Mississippi Educator License. They then secure a full-time teaching position and complete their MAT Internship in that role. After completing the MAT Internship year, candidates are recommended for a renewable, five-year Class A Mississippi Educator license. Completion of the MAT program leads to a Class AA license and eligibility for a higher salary.
