
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Secondary Education (7-12/K-12)
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at The W is designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field and want to become licensed teachers through an alternate-route program. This program provides the coursework and classroom experience needed to move into the teaching profession with confidence.
The MAT is a flexible, affordable program that can be completed in as few as four semesters. Coursework is offered online with advising support to create an individualized plan of study.

Admissions Requirements
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended
- At least 2.75/4.0 GPA
- Passing ACT/Praxis Core scores required for a GPA of 2.75-2.99
- 3 references for letters of recommendation
- Passing score on an approved Praxis II licensure exam (see below for more information)
You may be conditionally admitted to the MAT: Secondary Education program before passing the required licensure exams. Please speak with an advisor for details.

Career Outcomes
Graduates of the MAT program are prepared for:

Licensure Progression
- After admission and completion of initial licensure coursework: 3-year, non-renewable Class A Mississippi Educator License
- After completing Internship requirements: 5-year, renewable Class A Mississippi Educator License
- After earning the master’s degree: 5-year, renewable Class AA Mississippi Educator License
