Work in a school. Earn your degree. Become a licensed teacher.
At The W, your experience as an Assistant Teacher can become part of your pathway to your own classroom.
Our teacher preparation programs are designed to support students who are already working in schools—and our Assistant Teacher Apprenticeship can help eligible Education students take that first step by connecting them with paid Assistant Teacher opportunities while they complete their degree.
Assistant Teacher Apprenticeship
Start building your teaching career before graduation.
The Assistant Teacher Apprenticeship connects eligible Teacher Candidates with participating school districts seeking Assistant Teachers. Apprentices gain meaningful, paid experience in schools while completing their teacher preparation program at The W.
This isn’t an internship at the end of your program. It’s an opportunity to begin working in education while you’re still earning your degree.
Why become an Assistant Teacher?
- Earn while you learn
- Work in a paid school position while completing your degree.
- Build real classroom experience
- Learn alongside practicing educators and apply what you’re learning at The W.
- Complete job-embedded experiences
- When program and placement requirements are met, many required clinical learning experiences can be completed in your own school setting.
- Build relationships with a school district
- Become part of a school community before you graduate—and begin building the professional relationships that can lead to future opportunities.
- Move toward your own classroom
- Your Assistant Teacher experience and your coursework work together toward the same goal: becoming a prepared, licensed teacher.
Is the Apprenticeship right for me?
The Assistant Teacher Apprenticeship is designed for eligible Education students who are not currently employed as Assistant Teachers and want to begin gaining paid experience in a school while completing their degree.
Eligibility is confirmed by the Department of Education before students enter the apprenticeship process.
Already working as an Assistant Teacher?
You’re already gaining valuable classroom experience. Let us help you turn that experience into a pathway to teacher licensure.
NO BACHELOR’S DEGREE YET?
Earn your bachelor’s degree + teaching license
Complete an undergraduate teacher education program at The W while continuing to build experience in your school.
When program and placement requirements are met, Assistant Teachers may complete many required clinical learning experiences in their own school setting.
ALREADY HAVE A BACHELOR’S DEGREE?
Take an alternate route to teacher licensure
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs provide a pathway to teacher licensure and a master’s degree for those who already hold a bachelor’s degree.
Continue working in education while completing a graduate pathway designed to prepare you to become an effective teacher.
School Districts: Partner with The W
The W partners with school districts to connect future teachers with paid Assistant Teacher opportunities. Partner districts keep us informed of openings so we can match eligible Assistant Teacher Apprenticeship students with positions while they complete their teacher preparation programs.
