Mississippi University for Women is committed to providing safe programs for minors and vulnerable adults who are entrusted to our care or who visit our campus.

The University first adopted a Minors on Campus policy in 2015 and revised the program in 2026 to strengthen safe program practices. The updated process expands the focus beyond response and reporting by emphasizing prevention, professional boundaries, appropriate supervision, safe program design, and responsible communication in today’s digital environment.

All members of the University community should know how to recognize warning signs, maintain appropriate boundaries, understand when reporting is required, and speak up when something seems unsafe, inappropriate, or harmful.

Policy oversight is maintained by the Office of University Counsel. Compliance support is provided by the Center for Education Support.

Program Sponsorship and Program Directors

Each program involving minors must have an identified Sponsoring Unit and a designated Program Director.

Sponsoring Units are responsible for ensuring that any program they sponsor, approve, host, support, or allow to use University facilities follows the University’s Minors on Campus compliance process.

Program Directors are responsible for the day-to-day administration, safety, training, and planning of the program. Responsibilities include:

  • Completing yearly program registration.
  • Identifying and maintaining a roster of Authorized Adults.
  • Ensuring all required background checks, Minors on Campus Safe Program Training, and Safe Program Training Quizzes are completed before any Authorized Adult begins working with minors or vulnerable adults.
  • Training all Authorized Adults on program-specific policies, emergency procedures, supervision expectations, standards of conduct, digital communication requirements, reporting procedures, and participant safety protocols before participants arrive.
  • Collecting and maintaining required participant and staff forms and documentation.
  • Reviewing participant allergies, medical needs, accommodations, medications, and emergency contact information.
  • Developing and communicating emergency, crisis response, and parent notification procedures.
  • Ensuring appropriate supervision, staffing, and compliance with University policy throughout the program.
  • Following all standards of conduct, incident documentation, and reporting requirements.

These responsibilities apply to University-sponsored programs, programs conducted under University supervision on or off campus, and approved programs operated by non-University entities using University facilities.

Program Registration

All University-sponsored programs, camps, clinics, events, and activities involving minors must register through the Minors on Campus process. This includes programs held on campus, programs held off campus under University supervision, and approved programs operated by non-University entities using University facilities.

All programs must register, even if they may qualify as exempt. Registration allows the University to identify programs involving minors and determine the appropriate compliance requirements.

After registration, the Youth Program Specialist will review the program and determine whether it is classified as Covered or Exempt. The Program Director and Sponsoring Unit will receive instructions regarding any additional requirements.

Programs should register at least 60 days before the program begins. If you have not received a response, contact the Center for Education Support at least 30 days before the program start date to verify that your registration was received.

Minors on Campus Safe Program Training

The Minors on Campus Safe Program Training is required for all adults participating in Covered Programs and is strongly encouraged for adults participating in Exempt Programs annually. The training is also recommended for students participating in majors, courses, field experiences, service-learning placements, internships, clinical experiences, or volunteer experiences involving minors or vulnerable adults. The training provides an overview of the University’s expectations for protecting minors and vulnerable adults through safe programs, supervision, and mandated reporting.

Training topics include:

  • Mandated reporting responsibilities under Mississippi law, including recognizing abuse, neglect, exploitation, and reporting procedures
  • University supervision standards and safe program practices
  • Covered and Exempt Programs and University compliance requirements
  • Roles and responsibilities of Sponsoring Units, Program Directors, and Authorized Adults
  • Professional boundaries, one-on-one interactions, and appropriate conduct
  • Electronic communication, digital safety, and online professionalism
  • Creating safe physical and emotional environments
  • Preventing, recognizing, and responding to grooming, boundary violations, and other safety concerns

Training may be completed by reviewing the training presentation, watching the recorded training, or attending an in-person training session offered by the Center for Education Support.

Minors on Campus Safe Program Training Quiz

The Minors on Campus Safe Program Training Quiz is required yearly for all Authorized Adults participating in Covered Programs and is strongly encouraged for Authorized Adults participating in Exempt Programs.

The quiz is completed after reviewing the Minors on Campus Safe Program Training. Successful completion verifies that the individual understands the University’s Supervision of Minors and Vulnerable Adults on Campus Policy and the importance of protecting minors and vulnerable individuals on our campus.

All individuals serving as Authorized Adults in a University-sponsored, University-affiliated, or approved program, activity, camp, event, clinic, or facility use involving minors or vulnerable adults must complete the Minors on Campus Safe Program Training Quiz before participating in the program. This requirement applies regardless of employment status and includes faculty, staff, students, volunteers, contractors, chaperones, and representatives of outside organizations authorized to work with minors or vulnerable adults on University property.
