Eden Wales Freedman has been named the Eudora Welty Prize winner for her study, Reading Testimony, Witnessing Trauma: Confronting Race, Gender, and Violence in American Literature, which explores American literature with a focus on African American women writers. Through the lens of race and trauma theories, Wales Freedman examines Zora Neale Hurston, William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, and Jesmyn Ward, among others, connecting their work to the history of race in the United States and to current issues of racial and gender violence. Dr. Wales Freedman is Associate Professor and Vice Provost for Faculties and Academic Affairs at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota.
