Kwoya Fagin Maples hails from Charleston, South Carolina, where her debut collection of poems Long Eye is set. She draws on West African folklore about the water spirit Mami Wata to explore the landscape and culture of the Lowcountry. Maples earned her MFA in poetry from the University of Alabama where she now serves as Assistant Professor of Creative Writing. She is a Cave Canem fellow and has previously published the full-length poetry collection Ment and the chapbook Something of Yours and the co-edited anthology. She co-edited the anthology I Witness: An anthology of Documentary, Witness and Research Based Poetry, due out in 2027.
