Behavioral Intervention Team Mission

The mission of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is to:

  • Proactively build and sustain community with a comprehensive, collaborative team that identifies behaviors that are a risk of harm to self or others.
  • Provide structure for an effective method of addressing student behaviors that impact the University.
  • Promote campus safety by fostering a culture of reporting.
  • Help and support via educational, rather than punitive means, according to an established protocol and transparent procedures.
  • Provide training and education as we work together to promote student and community success and development.
  • Assess, evaluate and evolve team function and protocols over time as best practices are identified and refined.
  • Be a resource for students, faculty, administration, and staff.

How does the BIT team work

The Behavioral Intervention Team receives reports of disruptive, problematic, threatening, or concerning behavior via our online reporting tool. The team meets and assesses concerns and determines best response for the individual and community.  The team will follow up with report and provide support when necessary.
The group places a high priority on balancing individuals’ right to privacy with the university’s duty to respond to people experiencing difficulty or expressing at-risk behavior. The BIT Team’s primary objective is to connect students with the support and resources they need to be healthy and productive members of our campus community.
