PROSPECTIVE COMMUNICATION STUDENTS

Be Connected.

Communication is an essential human activity that connects us to each other as individuals and as a society. Effective communication isn't just public speaking. It's about media such as TV, movies, radio, social media, advertising and news. Our convergence-based program ensures that all our students have opportunities to practice their skills across multiple media and in multiple formats. At The W, you will learn and practice the skills of video and audio production, media writing, layout and design for print and digital to become a communications professional.

Instructors with real-world experience teach all communication courses. Graduates have experience across all aspects of communication and media from the valuable internship experience offered at The W, which isn't required at a lot of other universities.

Our graduates work at TV and radio stations, newspapers, branding and design firms, video production studios, universities and the armed forces. Career paths include advertising, public relations, video production, audio production, journalism, web design, print layout and design, and sports communication.

A Legacy of Affordable Quality

The W has a long legacy of communication instruction. Communication courses have been part of our university curriculum since the 19th Century—called Elocution back then. Not many communication programs can claim a history that goes back as far as the 1880s.

The university was founded in 1884 with the purpose of educating the under-served populations of Mississippi, and it is a tradition we strongly believe in to this day. The W consistently ranks as one of the best public universities in the Southeast according to U.S. News & World Report and Washington Monthly. Our commitment to an affordable education means we have one of the lowest tuition rates in the region.
