Call for Performances

Deadline: Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. CT

The Program Committee for the fifth annual international Music by Women Festival welcomes proposals from various fields of the musical profession. The 2021 Music by Women Festival will be held virtually, March 1-31. This festival brings together independent musicians, composers, current and retired academics, undergraduate and graduate students, and teachers who are interested in exploring music composed by women.

A maximum submission of two proposals per person is allowed. Presenters must be willing to be programmed on any day of the festival and, upon proposal acceptance, are required to register as a participants and submit their pre-recorded video no later than January 25th, 2021.

All submissions must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must contain program notes of no more than 200 words.
  2. Must not contain any identifying information as proposals will be reviewed through a blind review process.
  3. Music contain an mp3 sound file containing a sample of the actual work(s) proposed for the performance. 

Performances will be allotted up to 15 minutes for a pre-recorded video of a performance as part of the festival virtual concerts.  Please note that the videos will be available to the general public on the world-wide web and will remain on the festival’s YouTube page following the festival. In addition to the submission requirements above, performances must:  (1) feature performed work(s) composed by women historically or in the present day, (2) the work(s) must either be in public domain (composer’s life plus 70 years) or the proposer must obtain composer’s permission to submit the composition(s), as well as permission from other performers (if applicable) (3) specify the exact duration of the performance and instrumentation, and (4) have an accompanying mp3 sound file containing a sample of the actual work(s) proposed for the performance. Sound file should be devoid of any identifying information.  The festival is able to provide a collaborative pianist for performers who are unable to provide their own (please select this option on the submission form). 

 

Timeline: proposers will be notified of acceptance by January 2, 2021 and will have until January 25, 2021 to confirm participation by registering for the festival and submitting their pre-recorded performance videos.

 

 


Call for Scores

Deadline: Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. CT

The Program Committee for the fifth annual international Music by Women Festival welcomes submissions of original compositions from independent musicians, current and retired academics, and undergraduate and graduate students for performances at virtual concerts throughout the festival. The 2021 Music by Women Festival will be held virtually, March 1-31. The festival will accept submissions for any instrument combinations. If selected for programming, the performers and their pre-recorded performance videos will be provided by the composer. This call is open to women composers of any age, geographical location and stage in their professional career.  Preference will be given to works under 15 minutes in duration.

The festival is able to provide a festival pianist to either perform solo piano submissions or collaborative works with composer provided performers. This option DOES NOT include works for prepared piano and/or using extended piano techniques.

The festival concerts will feature selected pre-recorded videos provided to the festival by the composer by January 25th. Please note that the videos will be available to the general public on the world-wide web and will remain on the festival’s YouTube page following the festival.By sending in the submission proposal, the composer gives the festival permission to share the work and leave it online following the event.  The composer also affirms that all the performers have also granted permission. 

A maximum submission of two compositions per person is allowed. Composers must be willing to have their works broadcast any day of the festival and, upon proposal acceptance, are required to register as a participant and submit their pre-recorded video of their composition(s) no later than January 25, 2021.

 

All submissions must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must contain program notes describing the work (no more than 200 words).
  2. Must specify the exact duration of the composition and instrumentation, and indicate if the composer is requesting festival performers.
  3. Must contain a PDF file of the composition and a sound recording (MP3 or MIDI files only).
  4. Must not contain any identifying information in the composition title, score, or sound file, as proposals will be reviewed through a blind review process.

Timeline: composers will be notified of acceptance by January 2nd, 2021 and will have until January 25, 2021 to confirm participation by registering for the festival and submitting their pre-recorded video of the work(s).
