Earlier this year, Robert von Sternberg offered a selection of photographs to The W Galleries through an international philanthropic program. Von Sternberg is a distinguished photographer, with artwork in permanent art collections by 221 national and international public institutions in 46 states, Washington, DC, Australia, Canada, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.

This capstone exhibition features three art majors: Makaio Johnson (graphic design emphasis), Reggi Pech (graphic design emphasis), and Sarah Robertson (painting and drawing emphasis).

This exhibition, with scenes of daily life from around the world, is the project of this fall semester’s museum studies course. The students in the class have researched various works of art from the permanent collection and designed the exhibition as a way to introduce museum professions and practices.

Our celebration of this Mexican tradition is back with our annual Day of the Dead altar. Students in Professor Erinn Holloway’s Spanish class will give a gallery talk about the tradition in front of the installation.
October 4 – November 2Intersections of Gender and Place is a biennial exhibition that examines various issues of gender and also the impact of this region on the artist’s work. The parameters are purposefully vague so that the invited artists may address the theme through their own interpretations. The result is lively ‘conversation’ about gender in the South.

Illustrations in books, newspapers, magazines or posters help to communicate the intent of a text. Need to visualize a key moment in a narrative? Or express witty statements about the politics of the day? Illustrating the Point presents a range of ways that artists communicate visually.

Originally from Bogota, Columbia, Diana Neal is a self-taught fiber artist, who now resides in Starkville. Neal works in various techniques, including embroidery, needle punch, batik, and felting, often in combination with one another.
Summer 2023 – September 22, 2023
The creative endeavors of Mississippi artists is celebrated in this annual exhibition. Recent acquisitions, such as Suzi Altman’s photograph of outsider artist Joe Minter, are highlighted. Favorites, like Elayne Goodman and Eugenia Summer plus many more, are also included.

The W Galleries is proud to have one of the oldest permanent art collections in the state. Dr. Ralph Hudson began the collection as a teaching aid in the late 1940s. From its inception, the collection has focused on artwork from the region. We continue to collect artwork by Southern artists, and this exhibition features several new acquisitions as well as older favorites.
Five graduating seniors from The W will mark the completion of their undergraduate art programs with their capstone thesis exhibition.
