She draws on West African folklore about the water spirit Mami Wata to explore the landscape and culture of the Lowcountry. Maples earned her MFA in poetry from the University of Alabama where she now serves as Assistant Professor of Creative Writing. She is a Cave Canem fellow and has previously published the full-length poetry collection <em>Ment<\/em> and the chapbook <em>Something of Yours<\/em> and the co-edited anthology.
