{"id":21,"date":"2022-08-10T12:27:52","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T17:27:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/welty\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2023-07-19T23:23:19","modified_gmt":"2023-07-20T04:23:19","slug":"ephemeraprize","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/welty\/ephemeraprize\/","title":{"rendered":"The Eudora Welty Ephemera Prize for High School Creative Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Named in honor of Mississippi University for Women alumna Eudora Welty and one of the W\u2019s early creative writing journals, Ephemera, the $200 prize will be awarded to up to 5 entries. All prizewinners will be honored at the Eudora Welty Writers\u2019 Symposium at Mississippi University for Women on October 19-21, 2023. They will be invited to lunch with symposium authors, receive their award, and give a brief reading. Winning entries and honorable mentions will also be published on our website. School groups are invited to the Symposium, and all sessions will be also streamed live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One entry per student in one of the following categories: Fiction, Essay, or Poetry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fiction and Essays must be double-spaced, 2,000 words or less<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poetry must be single-spaced, 1-3 poems, 100 total lines or less<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Longer is not necessarily better!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each entry must be the original work of the student who submits it\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use of ChatGPT or other generative AI tools is not allowed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Entries must address this year\u2019s Symposium theme:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201c\u2018With an Instrument Made of Air\u2019: The Transformative Magic of Story\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or entries may respond to Eudora Welty\u2019s story &#8220;Circe&#8221; from\u00a0<em>The Bride of Innisfallen<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not include your name on your story, essay, or poems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do include a cover page with:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your name, high school, and teacher\u2019s name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The title of story or essay or titles of poems submitted<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your address, phone number, and email address<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Submission deadline: September 15, 202<\/strong>3<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submissions should be emailed to <a href=\"mailto:ephemera@muw.edu\">ephemera@muw.edu<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or may be mailed to: <br>          Dr. Kendall Dunkelberg<br>          Dept. of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy<br>          1100 College St., P.O. Box MUW-1634<br>          Columbus, MS 39701<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The final judges for the contest will be Eudora Welty Writers\u2019 Symposium authors Halle Hill and Claude Wilkinson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students must be enrolled at a high school (or be home schooled) in Mississippi in grades 10-12 for the 2022-23 school year. Students from nearby schools in Alabama (within approximately 100 miles of Columbus) or from a school sponsored by a W alum are also eligible. To sponsor a school outside Mississippi, the W alum needs only to attach a brief letter, indicating her\/his graduating class or year(s) of attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children and close relatives of faculty in the Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy or of the judges are ineligible.
