W Athletics continued its return to collegiate athletics by unveiling a new athletic logo designed by a nationally recognized firm.

“This is a great day for The W and Owls Athletics. This new logo provides a fresh and powerful mark for our teams and university to market to potential student-athletes, their families, alumni and supporters of The W,” said Jason Trufant, director of athletics.

The logo is colored in the traditional W Blue and Welty Blue and depicts the eyes of owl staring intensely. Arched above the eyes, “OWLS.”

“It is the perfect blend of the university’s well known ‘W’ mark and the new owl mascot. This logo gives our department a face for all to see and embrace as their own,” added Trufant.

The reveal was partnered with a short video celebrating the new logo by showcasing new athletic apparel and examples of uniform designs. Official Owls apparel will be available for purchase on Dec. 1 via the Bookend on The W’s campus.

To help establish and create a new brand and logo for W athletics, the university brought in strategic brand builder Joe Bosack & Co. of Pottsville, Pa. The nationally known firm has created logos for Boise State, the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Southeastern Conference and NCAA championships including the Final Four.

To develop a unique logo for W Athletics, the firm questioned members of The W community to develop the athletic mark. Five different concepts were then presented to an on-campus focus group. The final logo is a combination of the presented marks and suggestions from the on-campus group.

“I can’t thank Joe Bosack and Dave Haney of Joe Bosack & Co. enough for the hard work and dedication to this project. I would also like to thank Dr. Borsig and the University Cabinet members, the entire University Relations staff and all those who have supported our program thus far,” said Trufant.

“The W’s new athletic identity signals our return to intercollegiate athletics. The W Owls logo builds on tradition relying on university colors, our strong brand identity and our beloved mascot Ody the Owl. Go Owls!,” said W President Jim Borsig.

Since 1885 an owl has watched over campus from the top of Orr Chapel. Ody Owl was officially made the university mascot in 1982 after a committee was created to develop a new mascot for the university.

The W discontinued intercollegiate athletics in 2002 following a devastating tornado that destroyed a primary sports venue.
