Early this year, James Harmon and Margaret Hayward were recognized as Owl Stars for the first and second quarters, respectively.
James Harmon is a senior PC/network specialist and has been employed at The W for 14 years. Each day, Harmon provides the best services and support to campus employees and students including hardware support, software support, network connectivity, smart classroom technology, mobile devices, email and network infrastructure maintenance, to name a few.
“What I enjoy most about working at The W is the ability to gain knowledge and experience at all levels of IT. I am very fortunate to work with a team that supports one another, which is led by a supervisor who encourages each of us to continually learn, provides us with the environment and capability to do so, while additionally teaching through hands-on demonstration,” said Harmon. “The ability to do this is really reflective of the culture of The W as a whole. This University, its employees and the environment in which it operates, is what truly makes it a great place to work.”
Harmon is a Columbus native and enjoys tech-related hobbies, live concerts and playing the piano.
Margaret Hayward is a payroll accountant/retirement specialist in the Office of Human Resources has been employed at The W for 36 years. Daily, Hayward enters data into Banner that affects payroll. The information often regards newly hired employees, separating employees, adjustments to salaries, additional payments and changes to voluntary deductions. As retirement specialist, She answer employee questions about eligibility and the process for retirement and serve as liaison to PERS.
Hayward said, “The people are the best part of The W. Without cooperation from the dedicated, helpful, caring employees in offices all over campus, I would not reach my goal of depositing an accurate paycheck on payday.”
Hayward is a Columbus native who’s mother is an alum and worked for the MSCW Comptroller’s Office. She attended Demonstration School and remembers doing her homework in Whitfield Auditorium. Hayward holds two degrees from The W. When not on campus, Hayward enjoys reading crime mysteries, Sudoku puzzles, walking and her cats.
The Owl Star Award is presented by Staff Council to those staff members who show outstanding professionalism, expertise and dedication to the university.
