Mississippi University for Women’s nursing program has been ranked No. 1 in the state by RNtoBSNProgram.com.
Rankings for the “Best Nursing Schools in Mississippi in 2020 (On-Campus & Online)” are determined by cost, NCLEX pass rate and the number of nursing programs offered by each of the 22 schools in the state examined.
The W is identified as one of only two nursing programs in the state with a 100% passing rate for the NCLEX exam. The NCLEX is a mandatory exam that each nursing graduate must pass in order to become a licensed nurse.
“While faculty are teaching students how to provide quality safe effective care, they are also preparing the students for the examination,” stated Dr. Tammie McCoy, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “Understanding that each student learns differently, faculty present content in different ways and augment instruction with NCLEX practice tests and experts in the field as guest speakers. The ability to put the classroom content into action is what enhances success on the examination.”
The site also acknowledges that The W offers its students a well-rounded education because of the many routes offered in the program. While the associate of science in nursing and the bachelor of science in nursing are the two most well-known programs, the university also offers a master of science in nursing and a doctor of nursing practice. The W’s RN-BSN Advanced Placement Option, based out of Tupelo, is an option for working registered nurses who are interested in furthering their education.
“Each student is different and the pathways to becoming a successful nurse are many. The options allow students to enter in the best option for them. Additionally the options allow nurses an opportunity to practice at the highest level they choose,” said McCoy.
The website highlights the nursing shortage that the country is facing. Another catalyst in the nursing field is the aging U.S. population. These two factors making a nursing degree more pertinent now than ever.
“It is very important for more individuals to become nurses and to love the role of the registered nurse,” stated McCoy. “We all need healthcare at some point and we need enough nurses to provide that safe effective care.”
