Based on the recommendation of the Education and Outreach Structure Working Group, The W has sent a request to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning to create the School of Education that will include the Department of Education, the Office of Outreach and Innovation, the Child and Parent Development Center and Governor's School. The proposal will be considered by the Board at the April meeting. Until such time, the concept of the School of Education is pending approval by the IHL Board of Trustees.
Dr. Scott Tollison, provost and vice president of academic affairs, agreed with the assessment of the Working Group that having The W's teacher preparation programs at the College/School level will bring the university into alignment with institutions across the IHL system and assist in increasing brand awareness for the programs. The W's education and outreach programs have brought this university great distinction for generations and the proposed unit represents an opportunity to re-establish our presence in this marketplace. The new unit will also be bolstered by adding curricular offerings through the University Studies major (as part of the Complete-to-Compete initiative) and the Leadership Studies minor. These programs will complement the new unit's mission as a provider of lifelong learning.
