Language Immersion in Costa Blanca

We plan to depart the U.S. and head to the beautiful Mediterranean town of Alicante on the exquisite Spanish coastline called the Costa Blanca.

You will live, eat and socialize with Spanish host families; attend Spanish language courses at the University of Alicante taught by Spanish professors; and, in the afternoon, explore the city and the region with a tutor from The W in a "living" Spanish culture course. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive 6 hours credit from The W.

This trip promises to be a real educational and cultural treat. You will immerse yourself in the Spanish language, enjoy authentic Spanish cuisine, and experience the relaxed Spanish lifestyle living with and amongst Spaniards.

Courses

UN 240 Study Seminar in Spain
Spanish Language Course at the University of Alicante. The level of Spanish students take depends on a placement test. The course focuses on conversation and grammar taught through the context of the Spanish culture and society.

Costa Blanca Cultural Studies with MUW faculty member Erinn Holloway (echolloway@muw.edu). This course focuses on the cultural richness of the Province of Alicante within the Autonomous Community of Valencia. We discuss unique history, cuisine and language found in this small but diverse region of Spain.

Trip Costs

$3,505 — The total includes the following:

  • MUW & University of Alicante tuition for 6 hours
  • Room and board for 27 days/nights
  • Books and materials
  • Health insurance
  • Arrival meal at the University of Alicante
  • Guided tour of the city of Alicante and the castle of Santa Bárbara
  • Water sports at the Alicante Yacht Club
  • Cooking course at Restobar Gema Penalva
  • Farewell meal

The total cost does not include: airfare, spending money; bus/light rail fare; or payment for some inexpensive excursions.

Study Abroad Crisis Management Plan – Spain 2023

Having a crisis management plan while abroad is essential to safeguarding all participants enrolled in study abroad programs.  In all likelihood you will have a crisis free experience but in case an emergency situation should arise, we would like for all participants to have a plan to address such issues. 

In order to help anyone who may have to provide assistance to you in the event of an emergency, please keep with you at all times the following items:

  • Copy of your passport
  • Copy of your insurance card
  • A list of any medications you are currently taking and allergies with a short description of your reaction
  • You will also need a list of contacts to whom you should report an emergency (You will have this information available on a small card to carry with you at all times):

When reporting an emergency, give brief facts and stay on the line, if requested.  After notifying local law enforcement and/or the U.S. Consulate, alert those in your immediate area, including your faculty program directors.  In the event you are unable to get in touch with anyone in your program in Spain, contact Provost and/or MUW Police.
