{"id":21,"date":"2023-10-09T12:42:32","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T17:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2023-10-09T12:42:32","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T17:42:32","slug":"proficiencypolicy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/about\/proficiencypolicy\/","title":{"rendered":"Proficiency Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oral Communication Proficiency Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Speech-language pathologists working with individuals who have communication disorders must demonstrate excellent oral communication skills.&nbsp; Speech-language pathology students are expected to model all aspects of Standard American English including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and suprasegmental aspects of speech.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, students must speak in a clearly intelligible manner during spontaneous conversation, and produce all consonant and vowel phonemes of English accurately, at the sentence level, prior to beginning the clinical practicum experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speech-Language-Hearing Screening Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All graduate students who are admitted into the Speech-Language Pathology Program will be screened for speech, language, and hearing difficulties during the first fall term of their enrollment.&nbsp; Screening will be conducted by second-year graduate students under the supervision of licensed and ASHA-certified faculty in the Speech and Hearing Center.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, faculty members may identify concerns regarding a student\u2019s communication skills at any time.&nbsp; Students identified by either means are encouraged to have a speech-language evaluation either at the MUW Speech and Hearing Center or at a facility of the student\u2019s choice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the event therapy is recommended, the student will be encouraged to enroll in therapy at the MUW Speech and Hearing Center or at a facility of the student\u2019s choice.&nbsp; Evaluation and\/or therapy through the MUW Speech and Hearing Center will be provided at no cost.&nbsp; All costs incurred for services provided through another facility will be responsibility of the student.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The student must demonstrate skills as specified in the Oral Communication Proficiency Policy prior to enrollment in any clinical practicum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oral Communication Proficiency Policy Speech-language pathologists working with individuals who have communication disorders must demonstrate excellent oral communication skills.&nbsp; Speech-language pathology students are expected to model all aspects of Standard [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":18,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-21","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/21","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=21"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/21\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":22,"href":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/21\/revisions\/22"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/18"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/slp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=21"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
