While at the conference, Zarin wrote up summaries of some of the research being presented there for two national websites.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Raya_2025_gecko-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Zarin Raya holding a gecko.\" class=\"wp-image-1043\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Raya_2025_gecko-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Raya_2025_gecko-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Raya_2025_gecko-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Raya_2025_gecko-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Raya_2025_gecko-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anoleannals.org\/2025\/01\/20\/sicb-2025-impact-of-urbanization-on-anole-locomotion\/\">Zarin wrote a summary of research by Dr. Austin Garner at Syracuse University<\/a> on the impact of urbanization on anole locomotion for the blog <em>Anole Annals<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"837\" src=\"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Anole_Annals_screengrab_2025-1024x837.png\" alt=\"Screen grab on the Anole Annals web site.\" class=\"wp-image-1044\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Anole_Annals_screengrab_2025-1024x837.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Anole_Annals_screengrab_2025-300x245.png 300w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Anole_Annals_screengrab_2025-768x628.png 768w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Anole_Annals_screengrab_2025.png 1037w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Anole Annals<\/em> is a website run by and aimed at \u201canolologists\u201d or people that study anole lizards.&nbsp;On the site, contributing scientists share research news and updates related to anoles and other lizards.&nbsp;The site often seeks contributions from scientists going to conferences, that would be willing to check out and summarize anole-related presentations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Travis Hagey, Assistant Professor of Biology in the Dept. of Sciences and Mathematics, has had his own research featured in <em>Anole Annals<\/em> before, and also written blog posts for the site.\u00a0When Dr. Hagey learned that Raya was interested in Science Communication, he encouraged her to contact the site and volunteer to report back from the SICB Annual Meeting for them, which they gladly accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"582\" height=\"716\" src=\"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Hagey_gecko_2.png\" alt=\"Dr. Travis Hagey holding a gecko.\" class=\"wp-image-1047\" style=\"width:248px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Hagey_gecko_2.png 582w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Hagey_gecko_2-244x300.png 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 582px) 100vw, 582px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Hagey also put Zarin in touch with the <em>Life in the City<\/em> website, who also accepted her offer to report from the conference. <em>Life in the City<\/em> is a is a  blog launched in 2018 by researchers at New York University, Washington University, St. Louis, and the University of Toronto. The site serves as a communication hub for researchers worldwide to share and discuss research on the impacts of urban environments and how species adapt to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <em>Life in the City<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/urbanevolution-litc.com\/2025\/02\/03\/sicb-2025-the-impact-of-urban-heat-islands-and-wetlands-on-avian-diversity\/\">Zarin summarized the research of Emerald Lin<\/a>, a New York University undergraduate researcher, on the impact of urban heat islands and wetlands on avian diversity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"907\" height=\"798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Life_in_the_City_screengrab_2025.png\" alt=\"Screen grab from the Life In the City website featuring an article by Zarin Raya.\" class=\"wp-image-1045\" style=\"width:619px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Life_in_the_City_screengrab_2025.png 907w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Life_in_the_City_screengrab_2025-300x264.png 300w, https:\/\/www.muw.edu\/scimath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2025\/02\/Life_in_the_City_screengrab_2025-768x676.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Zarin was one of five students in total from the Dept. of Sciences and Mathematics who attended the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology Annual Meeting, their travel expenses funded by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA. In addition to reporting on the research that was being presented, Zarin also presented her own poster at the conference, titled &#8220;Genome analysis of <em>Aeromonas hydrophila<\/em> strain S14-452&#8243;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The small, personalized nature of MUW means that departments like the Dept. of Sciences and Mathematics get to know their students individually.
