Mary Lou Peyton Internship Scholarships
The History faculty invites applications to the Mary Lou Peyton Internship Scholarship program from History majors, who have been accepted into a history-related internship program which will be undertaken for academic credit. These scholarships are intended to help defray the costs of travel, living expenses, and/or tuition related to the internship that would not otherwise be incurred by students during their regular attendance at the university. Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis.

Who is eligible?
All Mississippi University for Women undergraduate students with a declared History major, including History, History with a concentration in Public History, or History with Teacher Certification in History are eligible to apply.
The student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.8 and a GPA in History courses of at least 3.0.
The student must have been accepted into an internship program and had the program approved by his or her departmental academic advisor.
Funds must be used during the current fiscal year (July -June).
The internship must be taken for 3 to 6 hours of academic credit at The W, though the internship itself does not need to take place at the university.
Students may use scholarship funds to support local, regional, national, or international internships.
Students may not use scholarship funds to support internship costs which would reasonably be incurred for a regular campus course (e.g. an internship in The W Archives during the fall or spring semester when a student is enrolled as a full-time student).
What kinds of internships can be funded?
The History faculty will consider applications from students who have been accepted to local, regional, national, or international internships that relate in some way to history or a history-related field. The History faculty will give preference to programs that provide experience in a field directly related to the student’s course of study and/or career goals.
How can I apply?
The application must include the following components:
- Create an account to submit the online application
- Provide a tentative budget with itemized expenses
- Provide a personal statement of 250-500 words explaining how the proposed internship connects to or enriches the student’s study of history;
- An unofficial copy of the student’s complete undergraduate transcript(s);
- Evidence of acceptance to an internship in the form of one of the following:
- An official letter or e-mail from the internship program or supervisor acknowledging the student’s acceptance;
- A statement from the student’s advisor or departmental internship supervisor declaring that the student has successfully arranged an internship position.
- A letter of support from the student’s major advisor- to be submitted by the advisor directly to history@muw.edu.
When are applications due?
The student must complete the application form and submit it, with all supporting materials, to the History Department no later than November 10 (for internships in the spring semester semester) or April 15 (for fall and summer internship semesters).
Results of the competition will be announced by December 15 and May 4, respectively. The awards are contingent on acceptance into and participation in a recognized study abroad program.
What’s the catch?
Successful applicants will be expected to prepare a brief report or presentation on their internship experience and how it has enhanced their educational experience and possible career goals.
