COLUMBUS, Miss.-- Mississippi University for Women recently earned two top-five rankings and had nine total programs recognized by Intelligent.com as being among the best in the United States for 2022.

The W received a No. 3 ranking in the Best Online Colleges with Lowest Out-of-State Tuition category and a No. 4 ranking in Best Master’s in Creative Writing.

“I’m pleased The W is recognized for the strength of our programs and the low cost of our tuition,” The W President Nora Miller said. “A stronger and more prosperous future comes from having a postsecondary degree, and with our low tuition, The W provides an excellent return on the investment.”

Intelligent.com is an online resource that provides online and on-campus program rankings and higher education planning. The research identifies programs in the nation based on flexibility, faculty, course strength, cost and reputation.

Intelligent.com said The W “offers flexible distance learning that appeals to busy adults or hybrid models that include on-campus and online formats.” Experts at Intelligent.com assessed programs that help students enhance and develop advanced skills for a variety of in-demand positions.

“I am incredibly proud of our faculty and staff in their efforts to provide the highest quality education at the greatest value,” The W Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Scott Tollison said. “I am thankful to see this quality and value continually affirmed by the various national ranking services.”

Dr. Kendall Dunkelberg, the chair of The W’s Department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy and director of the Creative Writing program, said Intelligent.com’s recognition is the latest in numerous rankings and awards the Creative Writing program has received.

“In addition to Intelligent.com’s ranking, The W again has been recognized as the No. 1 most affordable program by BestMastersDegrees.com, No. 2 by Nonprofit Colleges Online and as No. 3 by College Choice,” Dunkelberg said. “We are proud to consistently be ranked highly both for the quality of our program and for its affordable tuition.”

Intelligent.com implemented a unique methodology that ranks each program on a scale from 0 to 100 across five categories. The scoring system compares each university according to program strength, student readiness, return on investment, cost and student engagement. Researchers compared 704 programs from 2,900 universities and colleges in the United States.
