COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Opportunities excite Dr. Erin Kempker.
As chair of Mississippi University for Women’s Department of History, Political Science, and Geography, Kempker is able to offer unique and exciting chances to travel and to study abroad thanks to the Peyton Scholarship.
In the 2020-21 academic year, the Department of History, Political Science, and Geography has awarded $85,237 in Peyton Scholarship money to history majors. The scholarship fund is based on an endowment left to The W by the Mary Lou Peyton family.
“We’re going to award another $21,000 before the end of summer,” Kempker said.
But Kempker needs help finding students who want to capitalize on the opportunities the Peyton Scholarship provides.
“We’re so pleased with how well the scholarship money is helping students complete history degrees,” Kempker said. “But the Peyton Scholarship can impact so many more students that I am encouraging even more students to apply.”
Kempker said the process to apply for the scholarship shouldn’t intimidate students. Any history major is potentially eligible (history, history with teacher certification, history with public history concentration, etc.) for the award. Eligibility details and an application are available at: https://www.muw.edu/peyton.
The Peyton scholarships are competitively awarded based on annual available funds, but the Department of History, Political Science, and Geography is dedicated to renewing scholarships when a student demonstrates timely progress toward degree and stays engaged with the program. The scholarship is renewable annually up to four years (or graduation). The history program has been awarding scholarships to history majors since 2016.
The scholarship funding also supports study abroad and internships. This year, Emma Potter plans to leave the country for the first time and visit Spain, all because of a Peyton Study Abroad scholarship.
“We want as many students as possible to apply for this money,” Potter said.
