Columbus, Miss.— Mississippi University for Women’s Dining Services introduces dining option that prioritizes the health and safety of W community members with food allergies.
A 2020 Fall Customer Loyalty Survey showed that 79% of the students wanted more vegan and vegetarian variety and additional options for students with special diets. Sodexo, dining services partner on campus, is spearheading the launch.
Simple Servings is Sodexo’s award-winning, open-to-all, dining platform that offers fresh, flavorful meals prepared without the most common allergens, which account for 90% of all food allergy reactions.
Dishes at Simple Servings are prepared without milk, eggs, wheat, soy, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, and gluten.
MUW Dining had a Simple Servings component but the newly revamped program will feature new branding, a new prominent location in the dining hall, and new menus and recipes. The station at The W’s located in Hogarth Dining Center will have a carving station and action component with freshly sautéed vegetables.
Dish examples include brown sugar glazed ham, simply smashed sweet potatoes, roasted corn, and vegetable succotash or barbecued chicken with steamed fresh carrots and green beans with oregano.
Simple Servings is a bridge to help students transition from the safety of home, where all allergens are strictly excluded, to dining on their own in an environment that requires careful attention to the choices they make.
In addition, knowledgeable and attentive staff members are available to discuss ingredients and answer questions.
Menus are labeled accurately and made available online and through mobile applications. By providing these enhanced resources, we want to ultimately help students learn to advocate for themselves and obtain the information they need.
While the Simple Servings platform was built to cater first to those with allergies, this station has attracted a new wave of health-conscious eaters. As Simple Servings focuses on providing real, wholesome ingredients and vegan sides, this station has become appealing to all student groups.
