COLUMBUS, Miss.-- Mississippi University for Women is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Great Colleges to Work For® program. This is the eighth consecutive year the university has received the recognition.

The results, released today [Sept. 14] in a special insert of The Chronicle of Higher Education, are based on a survey of 221 colleges and universities. In all, 79 of the 221 institutions achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are reported for small, medium and large institutions, with The W included among the small universities.

“The W is a great college to work for, and I am thankful that my co-workers feel the same way. Our caring Owls community shows its unity by wearing masks and being WISE (Willing to Interact in a Safe Environment) and staying safe,” said President Nora Miller.

The W is one of only three small, public, 4-year institutions recognized this year and one of 31 colleges recognized in the Southeast for 2020. The university has participated since 2013 and has been recognized every year.

The W earned honors in four categories this year:

  • Professional/Career Development
  • Teaching Environment
  • Job Satisfaction
  • Tenure Clarity & Process

The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback. The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institution questionnaire that captured employment data and workplace policies from each institution and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff.

“At the outset, and in the midst of, a world-wide pandemic, 221 colleges and universities across the country intentionally chose to participate in the 2020 Great Colleges to Work For® program. Truly great workplaces, and those on the journey to become one, stand by their commitment to faculty and staff engagement in good times, and in bad,” said Richard K. Boyer, senior consultant at ModernThink.

The Great Colleges to Work For® program is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country. For more information and to view all current and previous recognized institutions, visit the Great Colleges program website at

ModernThink, a strategic human capital consulting firm, administered the survey and analyzed the results.
