COLUMBUS, Miss.-- Erin Patton, of Madison, is the 2019 recipient of the Culinary Arts Advisory Board Scholarship, awarded annually by the Mississippi University for Women Alumni Association.
Patton, a sophomore culinary arts major with a concentration in business, decided to pursue her education at The W based on the reputation of the culinary arts program and small, intimate culture of the institution.
Her career goal is to become a private chef. “The thought of working for myself is very enticing,” she said.
After a childhood of watching the Food Network, she thought a career in cooking was “the coolest thing ever.” Motivated by the many women in her family who also excel in cooking, Patton said the encouragement extended to cooking contests as a teenager, including “Great British Bake Off-style competitions, including one where we all made gingerbread showstoppers,” she said.
Patton said she is proud to be the first member of her family to attend The W, and looks forward to meeting new people.
The Culinary Arts Advisory Board Scholarship was endowed in 2012 by the MUWAA, and Patton is one of a long accomplished line of students who have been awarded the scholarship.
“We are delighted to award the 2019 Culinary Arts Advisory Board Scholarship to Erin. She’s an excellent student and very deserving of this special academic honor,” said MUWAA President Kristi Mosely.
The scholarship is eligible to full-time freshman or sophomore applicants majoring in culinary arts. Students must meet specific criteria, as well as submit a 250-word essay explaining his or her qualifications to receive the scholarship and career goals.
The MUWAA exists to support and promote the mission of The W while providing alumni engagement opportunities. Any former student who has completed at least twelve (12) semester hours at the university and who has made an annual contribution to the MUW Foundation is an active member eligible to vote and hold office for the year.
