Dr. Rita Felton

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- A community collaboration will bring an official commemoration of the Martin Luther King Holiday to the Trotter Convention Center Jan. 21, 2019.

The partnership involves the City of Columbus, Columbus Air Force Base, Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau, Lowndes County Board of Supervisors, Mississippi University for Women, Sodexo Food Services and the United Way of Lowndes County working together to create a meaningful day of service that honors the legacy of Martin Luther King.

Events will begin with an 8 a.m. breakfast that is free and open to the public as long as space allows. Program highlights include a keynote address by Dr. Rita Felton, retired command chief master sergeant at Columbus Air Force Base.

Dr. Felton was the first African-American female to be selected for this position and reported directly to the wing commander as one of his top advisers. In this role, she advised the wing commander on the mission effectiveness, professional development, military readiness, training, utilization, health, morale and welfare. She is the founder and CEO of Accentuate Life Ministries and Felton Consulting Group, LLC.

Following the breakfast, participants are encouraged to go to the Columbus Soccer Complex where United Way of Lowndes County will sort and distribute much needed school supplies to the over 700 teachers in Columbus and Lowndes County.

The United Way needs between 300-500 volunteers to help sort and distribute supplies.
