The funds were donated to The W\u2019s Department of Music in memory of Nancy Knight Gilpin, music alumna class of 1969. The gift was from her husband Michael D. Bogdan, piano<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Julia Mortyakova is professor and chair of the Department of Music at the university. She is the recipient of the 2021 Mississippi Arts Commission Performing Arts Fellowship and is the 2017 Honored Artist (Mississippi State Committee National Museum of Women in the Arts). Mortyakova is a laureate of the 2014 American Prize for her performance C\u00e9cile Chaminade, and the winner of the 2012 Sigma Alpha Iota Career Performance Grant. She maintains an international performing career and has performed in Bulgaria, Canada, Italy, Romania, Russia, Spain, Ukraine and throughout the U.S. She is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy, Vanderbilt University, New York University and the University of Miami. The Mortyakova\/Bogdan Piano Duo are the second prize winners of the 2017 Ellis Duo Piano Competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr.&nbsp; Valentin M. Bogdan joined The W in 2013 and is currently professor of music. He has concertized in Europe, North America and the Middle East, in the United States, Canada, Netherlands, Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania and Jordan.&nbsp;He has released two solo albums, \u201cThe Grands of Piano\u201d and \u201cLive in Concert\u201d and two piano duo albums \u201cJourney for Two\u201d and \u201cMusic by Women,\u201d part of the Mortyakova\/Bogdan piano duo. Throughout his career, he has received many awards including:&nbsp; the 2018 Mississippi Arts Commission Artist Fellowship, the 2nd prize at the Ellis Duo Piano Competition, 2nd Prize at the International Varna Symphonic Workshop (Concerto Competition), winner of the WSU Concerto Competition and semifinalist in the American Prize.
