COLUMBUS, Miss.\u2014The low-residency master of fine arts program in creative writing at Mississippi University for Women has been recognized as the top-ranked program by Intelligent.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ranking No. 1 and named the Intelligent Pick, the MFA ranked the highest in the \u201cThe Top 20 Online Master\u2019s in Creative Writing Degrees.\u201d
 
\u201cWe are proud of this most recent recognition of the quality of our program,\u201d said Dr. Kendall Dunkelberg, professor of English and director of Creative Writing. \u201cThese rankings acknowledge the value of our low in-state tuition for all students, which is especially important for low-residency programs where students often have limited financial aid. We are glad to see they also consider our program\u2019s quality and student satisfaction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The site evaluated each program based on reputation, flexibility, cost, reputation, faculty and outcomes. The site then calculated an Intelligent Score for each program on a scale of 0 to 100. The W\u2019s MFA scored a 99.22. The top picks for the best online master\u2019s in creative writing are highly regarded, cost-effective and flexible.  
 
To compile the ranking, 409 education programs were compared and 164 universities and colleges were assessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The W\u2019s low-residency MFA in creative writing is a 48-hour program that can be completed in two or three years while offering extended options to meet student\u2019s needs. Participants take online classes, combined with two types of brief residency classes. Upon completion, students receive a terminal degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since its founding in 2015, The W\u2019s low-residency program has graduated 18 students with the master of fine arts, and 37 students are currently in the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI credit our success to the excellent writers who teach in our program and the talented and hard-working students we\u2019ve been able to attract,\u201d Dunkelberg explained. \u201cHardly a week goes by without one or more of our current students or alumni sharing news about a publication or other successes in their writing. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students praise the diversity of the program, the openness to cross-genre writing, the attention they receive from faculty and other students due to the small class sizes and on-campus residencies and the program\u2019s focus on the real-world concerns of professional writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Intelligent.com, a master\u2019s in creative writing will also prepare students for employment as an English literature or writing instructor at the post-secondary level. Employment is expected to rise 4% by 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
