About the Symposium
The theme, “Imagine, Inspire, Challenge,” is drawn from remarks made by Dr. Doris Taylor in her May 2015 commencement speech at Mississippi University for Women. In it, she encouraged graduates to “trust your crazy ideas.” Her career is an example of imagining possibilities, challenging limitations, and inspiring revolutionary developments in her research. Coincidentally, the acronym II&C represents the earliest days of the institution now known as The W, when today’s university was preceded by the Industrial Institute and College. That institution also challenged norms and became the inspiration for the radical idea that women should be educated in technical skills.
As part of its continued accreditation by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, The W is challenging its campus community to “Think Outside the Books.” As the theme of the university’s Quality Enhancement Plan, the effort encourages students to develop the intellectual curiosity that fuels critical thinking and lifelong learning. The STEM symposium will dramatically illustrate why intellectual curiosity matters.
